I have had several amazing occupations in life: sportswriter, wildland firefighter, teacher and coach. Mirte and I even once sold almost everything we had, left our jobs on the private Christian school campus where we felt like king and queen, and moved cross country to Philadelphia to be youth leaders at a tiny church in the inner city. With all that change, I often wondered why I moved on so much, why I was so restless. Looking back, however, I realize God gave me a missionary’s heart, a heart that says, “Here I am. Send me.”

I believe God has sent me to FCA, and in its vision I have found something that uses my missionary heart and my experiences, as well as my love of sports, mentoring young people and reaching the lost. I see myself as a missionary on domestic soil, with my people group being coaches, athletes, and anybody they intersect with and impact.

Having worked in public schools, and having seen the confusion, hopelessness, darkness and violence, I also believe that there is no more crucial battleground for the Kingdom of God. Yet we don’t have nearly enough soldiers in the fight. With FCA, I get to be a soldier in that struggle for hope, identity and purpose, while raising up others who will fight as well.
